Trading Standards Primary Authority Update

The NPA arranged a three -way meeting with Will Evans at the London Assay Office, Jess Proctor from Trading Standards Primary Authority and the NPA on 24th March 2026. We discussed the recent visits to pawnbrokers by the Assay Office/TSO and the inconsistencies delivered, in advertising and selling unmarked precious metals.

Our Primary Authority has agreed to draft a one- page document, which we will review and provide feedback before being finalised, it will clearly summarise the Hallmarking Act, which will enable our industry to continue advertising and promote “unmarked metals”. I will be aiming to share the final document by the end of April. Once the document is approved, any NPA member who disagrees with the advice provided by your local TSO, will be able to contact our Primary Authority through the NPA. In summary, we will continue to follow the Hallmarking Act, as our stores have always ensured.
